Free data recovery for Mac

We recover your files. You help someone recover.

Reco costs nothing. If it brings back something that matters, give what it was worth to the Mersal Foundation instead. Not to us.

“Don’t pay me. Pay for someone’s treatment.”

I could charge for Reco. Other people need that money far more than I do, so it goes straight to them.

How it works

Reco reads the drive one square at a time. Each square is a real slice of it, and the time left is measured, not guessed.

  1. Choose the drive

Plug in the card or drive. Disk images work too.

  2. Scan

Pause whenever you like, or come back tomorrow.

  3. Review

See how intact each file is, and pick the ones you want.

  4. Recover

Saved to a different drive, with names and dates where they survive.

Your folders, as they were

Original names and folders, wherever the drive still remembers them.

Failing drive
Its copy

Copy a failing drive first

One careful copy to a disk image, then Reco scans the copy.

Stopped at 64%. Continues from there.

Scans you can pick up later

Quit, unplug or restart: Reco continues where it stopped.

Reads only. Nothing leaves your Mac.

  • Never writes to the drive you scan

Reco opens it read-only, and won’t save recovered files onto it.

  • Your files stay yours

No account, no uploads, no analytics.

  • Only one thing ever goes online

Questions

More answers on the support page.

I just deleted something. What should I do right now?

Stop using the drive. Don’t take new photos on the card, don’t copy files onto it, and don’t install anything on it, Reco included. Then scan it with Reco, and save what you recover to a different drive.

Will Reco get my files back?

Often, but no app can promise it. If a file’s space has been overwritten, or a Mac’s built-in SSD has already cleared it (TRIM), the data is gone. Reco shows you what it can find, and how intact each file is, before you recover anything.

Which drives and Macs does it work with?

SD and microSD cards, USB sticks, external hard drives and SSDs, your Mac’s own disk, and disk images (.dmg, .img, .iso), formatted as APFS, Mac OS Extended (HFS+), exFAT, FAT32 or NTFS. Reco runs on any Mac with macOS 26 or later, Apple silicon or Intel.

Is Reco really free?

Yes, all of it: scanning, previews, recovering files and repairing videos, with no license key and no subscription. Nothing is held back for people who give.

Why do you ask for donations to Mersal?

Because the price of a recovery app is better spent on someone’s treatment. Giving is optional, it happens on Every.org, and none of it comes to Reco. Reco is independent and isn’t affiliated with the Mersal Foundation.

Is it safe for my drive?

Reco only reads. It never writes to, repairs or formats the drive you scan. See the data-recovery disclaimer for the honest fine print.

Get yours back. Then pass it on.
